The most common procedure to treat gingivitis is scaling and root planing (SRP), which restores the health of the gums and teeth by deep cleaning below the gumline, then evening the surface of the tooth to minimize future build up. After one or several scaling and root planing procedures at DentalWorks - Louisville in Louisville, KY by our dentists, the gums and teeth are usually restored to health and the patient'ss symptoms will begin to clear.
"Amazing staff, excellent care!"- S.L. / Google / Jun 14, 2019
"This is an excellent office. All of the staff are very nice, I like the way they are organized, and they offer more services than the typical dentist's office. I particularly like that, when they are assessing your gums, they go tooth by tooth and rate your gums in that area on a scale of 1-4. Other offices just give a vague "they look good/bad" and it doesn't mean to much. The way they do it allows you to see how healthy your gums are in each particular area and they can track the health over time. They also have a service in which they use a laser to kill the bacteria under the gum line, which isn't covered by most insurances but is very inexpensive and awesome that they have this. Highly recommend this office; I won't be going anywhere else!"- R.H. / Google / May 16, 2019

What to Expect
For the scaling and root planing procedure, our dentists will apply local anesthesia on the areas being treated. Sedation may be added to help the patient remain comfortable and calm during the procedure. To reach all areas of the gum pockets and remove the plaque and tartar that has built up, our dentists will use a manual scaling tool or an ultrasonic cleaner. After the gum pocket is cleaned, our dentists will minimize the areas where plaque and tartar can become trapped by planing (smoothing) the surface of the tooth. After the procedure, the gums will begin to heal and reattach properly to the tooth root. Some patients may need more than one treatment to get their best results.
After the scaling and root planing treatment is done, patients might experience some inflammation or bleeding of the gums for a few days. To keep the gums and teeth clean after the scaling and root planing procedure, patients should talk about proper techniques for brushing and flossing so they can establish a good home care routine. Patients should also be sure to schedule dental exams at least once a year at DentalWorks - Louisville or as recommended by our dentists. Our dentists will usually schedule a follow up appointment 2 - 4 months after the procedure to check the patient's progress.
Since scaling and root planing is generally a medically necessary treatment for gum disease, most dental insurance companies will cover some or all of the cost of the procedure. DentalWorks - Louisville will contact the patient's insurance company to calculate their specific coverage and out-of-pocket expenses. Patients can also discuss payment options and financing plans while they have their consultation with our dentists.
